About
From barely being able to swim 25m to multiple IRONMAN finishes - what did it take to get there?
With a handful of marathon finishes and strong bike form, learning to swim was the missing jigsaw piece needed to take on and complete multiple IRONMAN and 70.3 races.
My story
Back in 2019, I started my swim journey with coached sessions at Maidstone Harriers Run & Tri Club, having been captivated by following the journey of a couple of clubmates finishing IRONMAN Italy and thinking… “one day, this will be me!” But first, I needed to get my swim up to scratch.
What followed was a complex puzzle of learning the technical skill of endurance swimming, adding in the unpredictability of open water and the sea, and overcoming many hurdles along the way - both mental and physical. Around 2 years later, I completed my first 70.3 at Outlaw Holkham.

The turning point
One memorable swim was arranging to meet a few friends for a sunrise swim in the sea off the beach at Minster-on-Sea in 2020. The camaraderie and support of friends around me melted away any nerves and worries about the lack of predictability that sea swimming can bring, and the confidence boost I took away from that occasion will stick with me for a long time. Together we CAN do AMAZING things!

What did it take?
There are many aspects to ensuring the sport is rewarding, both in training and in racing.
- Embrace consistency and enjoy the process - “can I improve on this one day, just by a little bit?” - and seeing that compounding and reaping the benefits.
- Patience - piece by piece at times, but the finish line is the celebration of all the hard work invested along the way to get there.
- The right people around you - nobody solves the puzzle alone.
